Supporting Technology for Defense Applications
At NJII, the Defense division is mobilized to identify, build, and implement innovative solutions that identify and operationalize advances in technology. Using ideation sessions, NJII works with industry partners and the Department of Defense (DoD) to understand how new technology will be deployed and used. NJII works to support program objectives by providing design capabilities, workforce training development and field test support. The key outcomes are workforce development, improved protection of military personnel and critical assets, and improved efficiency of military operations.
To achieve these outcomes, NJII aligns and advances emerging technologies to operationalize them, with a particular focus on advanced manufacturing, contested logistics, and AI/computer vision. The programs implemented together have provided assurances for supply chain, soldier and officer safety, utilities protection and natural resource preservation.
We have established private and public partnerships with government agencies to build, test, and prototype solutions to support defense applications. These highly collaborative relationships drive agile innovation and for next generation problem solving.

COMET
The Collaborative Operationalized Manufacturing Engineering and Training Program, known as COMET, is a joint initiative of NJII's Defense Division, NJIT resources and the United States Department of Defense. Located at Landing 360, NJII's Advanced Manufacturing Center in Landing, New Jersey, this public-private partnership supports the progress of advanced manufacturing and business development in NJ. By providing expert education and training, COMET is a flagship representation of workforce development, showcasing state-of-the-art equipment and a vetted technical operations.
NJ Unmanned Aviation Systems Test Site
The New Jersey Unmanned Aviation Systems Test Site (NJUASTS) is the only New Jersey Unmanned Aviation Systems Test Site established by the State of New Jersey. NJII is the manager and operator of this airspace. The founding Grant Agreement, made between the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) and the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) established the New Jersey Unmanned Aviation Systems Test Site (NJUASTS) to advance the integration of Unmanned Aviation Systems (UAS) across all fields of use while assisting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the resolution of issues pertaining to the integration of UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS).
