The Companies to Watch list was first introduced in 2022 to highlight companies within New Jersey that are “uncommonly successful, growing quickly, or conducting business in a way that improves the lives of a wide range of stakeholders.” The featured businesses represent a diverse slate of industries, goals, and accomplishments, including both new startups as well as long-established corporations.
The extensive list of companies featured two organizations from Newark: The Newark Symphony Hall and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. However, their description of NJIT included much about the New Jersey Innovation Institute, and the hiring of Dr. Michael Johnson as the company’s President. They highlight a quote from Johnson in which he states: “As I look at NJII, I see an opportunity to greatly expand the organization’s scope, size, and impact over the next few years as we look to form stronger public and private partnerships, accelerate the translation of NJIT technologies, expand corporate education programs and spur innovation within the state while leveraging NJIT’s vast resources.”
The article also discussed a $6 million grant given to NJIT by the National Science Foundation, the development of workshops and training for students, researchers, and faculty, as well as state-of-the-art technology being developed at the university, labor related issues, and more.
