New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), a New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) corporation, announces that Thomas Bartiromo, chief innovation officer, Healthcare Delivery System’s iLab was named 2017 Innovation Healthcare Hero by NJBIZ.

“I am truly honored to have been presented this prestigious award by NJBIZ,” said Bartiromo. “I thank all of my colleagues at NJII for their support and allowing me the opportunity to pursue my passion of creating new programs and the conditions to improve healthcare”

As Chief Innovation Officer, Bartiromo spearheaded the creation of NJII’s Ideation Program for Healthcare, a cutting-edge innovation and incubation initiative designed to help create and launch the next wave of innovative problem-solving in healthcare technology, products and services, consistent with NJII’s mission to be “an innovative research organization dedicated to scientific research, education, economic development and urban revitalization in New Jersey.” Earlier this month, NJII announced that Hackensack Meridian Health signed on as a charter member of the program.

“There is no one more deserving of this award,” said Tomas Gregorio, senior executive director of the NJII Healthcare Delivery Systems iLab. “Tom is always looking for the next challenge, the next disruptor and the next innovation to improve healthcare. His tireless efforts creating our new healthcare program and ideation center will ultimately save lives and improve the patient healthcare experience.”

The NJII Ideation Center boasts large open spaces that enables an “ecosystem” of innovation and invention in science and technology. Members of the program will leverage the combined skills of entrepreneurs, major corporations, research scientists, and other resources to solve problems presented by the healthcare industry and work to accelerate innovative product launch activities within the healthcare sector. NJII’s Ideation Program was launched to foster innovation and to move transformative ideas through a process that turns them into real-world products that are ultimately launched into the healthcare marketplace.

“Tom always steps up to the challenge,” said Dr. Don Sabastian, president of NJII. “As an innovator he embraces uncertainty as a way to improve, refine and challenge the status quo. Everyone at NJII is proud of Tom and the work he is accomplishing for the Institute.”

Bartiromo has more than than 20 years of healthcare experience, including senior IT/CTO positions at Barnabas Health, Hartford Health and IBM. As the former Senior Vice President, CIO & CTO at Barnabas Health, Bartiromo spearheaded efforts to re-organize IT services from a de-centralized to a distributed, shared services model proudly leading a team of 250 staff members to improve the cost structure and customer service, with an operating budget of $64.2 million.

Among his achievements, Bartiromo and his team successfully implemented the next generation Clinical Information System for Computer Physician Order Entry and Medication administration; and initiated a system wide vulnerability management program to manage cyber and other security threats faced by Barnabas.
