What is NJII?

NJII is a new model for business innovation.  We provide the link between industry and NJIT’s top researchers and state-of-the-art facilities. We are an NJIT corporation that applies the intellectual and technological resources of the state’s science and technology university to challenges identified by industry partners. We are proud of New Jersey’s long history of innovation and want to continue the tradition and we want New Jersey to be a leader of industry, ingenuity, and entrepreneurship.

History of Innovation

The world owes a bit of debt to the Garden State. Most people know about Thomas Edison’s contributions to society, but did you know that Band-Aids, the tv dinner, Bubble Wrap, and the drive-in movie were also invented in New Jersey? So were the modern air-conditioner, electron magnification, LCD, and the transistor. New Jersey also has a long history of pharmaceutical innovation. Streptomycin, tetracycline, and Valium are all of products of New Jersey laboratories.

Campbell's condensed soup was invented in Camden.

1878

Magnetic recording technology was invented in Bridgeton.

1907

The batting cage was created in Hopewell.

1913

Chlorinated water was invented in Belleville.

1920

Band-Aids were invented in New Brunswick.

1921

Air conditioning was invented in Newark.

1933

Drive-in-movies were created in Camden.

1938

The Teflon was invented in Deepwater.

1943

Streptomycin (treatment for tuberculosis and other serious infections) was invented in Newark.

1944

The TV dinner was invented in West Orange.

1952

The bar code was invented in Atlantic City.

1956

Bubble wrap was created in Elmwood Park.

1963

Valium (treatment for anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures) was invented in Nutley.

1968

Liquid crystal display was invented in Princeton.

1987

Anti-theft tags were invented in Ramapo.

1988

Antibacterial toothpaste was invented in Piscataway.
