The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System

What is MIPS?

The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) is one of two tracks in the Quality Payment Program, a new program under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA). The Quality Payment Program aims to simplify quality reporting and change the way clinicians receive Medicare payments.

Effective January 1, 2017, MIPS streamlines previous activities into one:

  • Quality – Previously Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS)
  • Advancing Care Information – Previously EHR Incentive Program (Meaningful Use)
  • Cost – Previously Value-Based Payment Modifier (Starts in 2018)
  • Improvement Activities – New category which promotes engagement in clinical activities

What We Do

The NJII Registry offers a multitude of services that will aid clinicians in transitioning into the MIPS reporting program. With a 5 year history of successful PQRS and Meaningful Use reporting services, CMS has qualified NJII as a certified MIPS registry. NJII has the resources and experience to ease the reporting process for 2017 MIPS, including:

  • Consultation services: Focus on education on all MIPS categories, measure selection guidance, strategies on how to avoid penalties and optimize incentive payments, etc.
  • Submission services: Access to our registry for submission to CMS for all MIPS categories, self-help tools for successful reporting, FAQs on registry submission, and more!

NJII’s experienced MIPS team has the knowledge required to help your organization effectively:

  • Make the transition from the former legacy programs (PQRS, MU) to MIPS as smooth as possible

Step-by-Step MIPS Action Plan

1. Register

Register with NJII to begin the reporting process. Following payment, your practice will receive log-in credentials to the NJII MIPS Portal.

2. Select Your Reporting Option

For each clinician, select your reporting option. Reporting requirements will vary for individual versus group reporting. For guidance in selecting measures for the different categories, visit ‘Measures by Specialty.’

3. Pick Your Pace

For the 2017 transition year, CMS is allowing clinicians in MIPS to “Pick Your Pace”. Eligible clinicians can choose to submit something, submit a partial year, or submit a full year.

4. Collect Data

Once measures are selected, collect the required data from the practice’s medical records. NJII can assist with data extraction, as a part of consulting services.

5. Enter Your Data

Enter your data onto the NJII MIPS portal. Track your progress in our dashboard, which updates your performance projection as data is periodically added.

6. Submit Your Data

Confirm your data and submit onto the portal. A MIPS advisor will validate the submitted data before it is sent to CMS.
